(5 Sep 2018) As Facebook and Twitter executives prepared to defend their companies on Capitol Hill about foreign interference in U.S. elections, conservative radio host Alex Jones showed up before a Senate hearing room to blast the Democratic Party, large corporations and the leading tech companies, claiming they are working together to silence conservative, nationalist and populist voices ahead of the midterm elections. 'You're not going to be able to shut people down like this,' Jones said This summer, Silicon Valley's internet giants took action against Jones, who is considered by many to be a conspiracy theorist, by denying him access to their platforms, showing the power of large internet companies over public discourse. Wednesday, Jones took his case to reporters on Capitol Hill. Jones blasted what he called 'the dinosaur corporate media' for not defending the First Amendment. 'It's happening to everybody now who's a libertarian or conservative,' he said. 'The dominoes are falling. The First Amendment is being destroyed.' Inside the hearing room, Twitter's CEO was expected to face angry Republicans who claim the companies have shown evidence of bias against conservatives. In prepared testimony released ahead of a House hearing Wednesday afternoon, Jack Dorsey says his company does not use political ideology to make decisions. Congress has sharply criticized the social media companies over the last year as it has become clear that they were at the forefront of Russia's interference in the 2016 elections and beyond. That scrutiny has led to additional criticism over the companies' respect for user privacy and whether conservatives are being censored - frustrations that are particularly heightened ahead of the midterms.
